Physical Intervention PDF Print E-mail

CMS define physical intervention as "the use of force that is maintained against resistance".  By it's nature, the use of any physical intervention results in an increase in the risk of injury to the persons involved.  It is vital that this increased risk is effectively managed and that staff using physical interventions are trained in their safe and lawful use.  We apply the following priciples to our physical intervention training:

  • The use of force must always be considered a last resort in any situation.
  • We will only provide physical intervention training as part of a conflict management course which includes defusing and de-escalation skills
  • We will only train those skills that have been shown to be appropriate for each delegate based upon a prior risk assessment
  • All physical skills will withstand legal scrutiny and fall within legal boundries including reasonable force, self defence and use of a statutory power
  • We will carry out a practical assessment at the conclusion of each course to ensure that a satisfactory standard is met
